Visiting Thingvellir National Park on the Golden Circle

Thingvellir National Park, written Þingvellir in Icelandic, combines a historic assembly place with a landscape of fissures and rock walls. It is one of the Golden Circle's main stops alongside Geysir and Strokkur and Gullfoss. For a first visit, decide whether the priority is a walk from Hakið, the exhibition or an organised water activity at Silfra. These use different parts of the park and need different arrangements.

Hakið visitor centre stands beside the viewing platform, with access into Almannagjá from there. It makes a useful starting point for understanding the landscape before walking into the gorge. Leave room in the day for looking around rather than treating the park as a photograph taken between drives. A Golden Circle route plan helps balance this stop with the geothermal area and waterfall.

Almannagjá and the assembly landscape

The fissures are part of an active volcanic region where the movement of continents is visible in the terrain. That geological setting gives the walk its striking form, but Þingvellir's UNESCO status is cultural. The Alþing assembly began around 930, and assemblies continued here until 1798. The historic meeting landscape is therefore as important to the visit as the rock walls themselves.

Use the viewpoint to orient yourself before following the permitted access into Almannagjá. Keep attention on local signs and the route back to your chosen parking area. The park visit can be kept to the outdoor landscape or extended with the exhibition. If the assembly story is your main interest, the Golden Circle history guide explains that background without turning the walk into a checklist of geological sights.

Choose P1, P2 or P5 for your walking plans

P1 Hakið is at the upper end of Almannagjá. P2 Efri-Vellir lies east below Öxarárfoss, while P5 Valhöll is near the church and Silfra. Choose the location that matches your visit rather than using a water activity's meeting instructions for an ordinary sightseeing walk. Keep the parking area in mind when arranging a return meeting with companions.

As checked in November 2026, the car tariff for up to 5 seats is 1,000 ISK per vehicle per day. Payment covers P1, P2 and P5 on that payment day. Machines are provided at the visitor centre and toilet building and at P2 and P5, with web payment also available. Vehicle parking is a different expense from exhibition admission or a Silfra activity; budget for the services you actually use.

Visitor centre and the Heart of Iceland exhibition

The visitor centre's published hours are 09:00 to 18:00 from April to October and 09:00 to 17:00 from November to March. These are building hours. Plan an exhibition visit around them and follow local instructions for outdoor paths. Special dates can have different arrangements, so use the day's information when planning around a closing time.

The Heart of Iceland exhibition costs 1,200 ISK for adults, separately from parking. Visitors aged 17 and under enter free; students aged 18 and over and seniors pay 600 ISK. Admission is available online or on site. Choose the exhibition for more context, then allow a separate part of the visit for the landscape outside rather than assuming a building ticket settles every aspect of the day.

Silfra activities and the guided alternatives

Silfra is a planned water activity rather than an impromptu swimming stop. Permits and a buddy are required, and the water is cold. Read the separate Silfra snorkeling and Silfra diving pages for the different equipment and qualification requirements. Walking past this part of the park and joining a water tour are distinct ways of visiting.

For a day starting in Reykjavík, the Golden Circle and snorkeling combination includes return pickup, snorkeling equipment, a certified snorkeling guide, underwater photographs and hot chocolate with cookies after snorkeling. The Secret Lagoon minibus combination includes return Reykjavík pickup, a small group format and bath entry. The sightseeing minibus option includes Reykjavík pickup and drop-off, the main route stops and Kerið entry. Choose by the extra activity you want, with the broader tour comparison useful for other formats.

Protect the park while walking: leave plants and geological objects in place, avoid disturbing wildlife and do not light fires. In winter, road conditions and local barriers matter more than a fixed timetable. Allow a flexible day, use suitable winter equipment and follow any path closure rather than trying to complete a planned circuit at all costs.
