Secret Lagoon: Golden Circle Tours and Bathing

A Secret Lagoon stop adds warm bathing water to a Golden Circle day. Choose between Reykjavík round trips with admission and plan the pool visit around its bathing rules.

  • Three main stops explained
  • Bus, small group and private options
  • Bathing and Silfra experiences compared

Secret Lagoon and a day on the Golden Circle

Secret Lagoon is a bathing stop in Flúðir, a town in the Golden Circle region. Its water is described by the operator as 38 to 40 °C. A visit gives the day a different focus from walking through Þingvellir, watching Strokkur or looking into the Gullfoss gorge: here you allow time to change, shower and spend part of the trip in warm water.

Decide whether you want a complete excursion from Reykjavík or are arranging your own Golden Circle route. The excursions featured here combine sightseeing with lagoon admission. Their total durations cover transport and other stops as well as the bath, so a full-day programme is not a full day in the pool.

Choose the departure and programme that fit

The eight-hour guided bus excursion includes hotel pickup and drop-off, an experienced driver-guide, return bus transport and admission to Secret Lagoon. Food and drinks are extra. This format suits a traveller who wants the transport and bath entrance arranged together rather than driving between the sights and a separate pool reservation.

The ten-hour combination with Kerið starts at Bus Stop 12, Höfðatorg on Þórunnartún, with hotel pickup available when that option is selected. A guide, Wi-Fi and lagoon admission are included; food, drinks and a towel are extra. Its programme specifies Laugarvatn Fontana as a substitute from 13 to 23 May, without assigning a year. Use the date-specific bathing arrangement when choosing this departure.

The nine-hour small-group combination includes pickup and drop-off from Reykjavík, an English-speaking guide, an air-conditioned vehicle, Wi-Fi, Golden Circle highlights and Secret Lagoon entrance. Treat the nine hours as the whole outing rather than water time. For a broader comparison of sightseeing formats, see Golden Circle tours from Reykjavík.

Showering, towels and the bathing area

Before entering the water, shower thoroughly without swimwear. Showers and a locker are part of the lagoon's admission arrangements, while towels and bathing clothes cost extra. Bring your own if you want to avoid arranging those items on arrival. Keep the distinction between the bath's facilities and the individual excursion's inclusions: transport packages describe their own extras.

Running, jumping and diving are prohibited. The neighbouring hot springs are separate from the bathing pool and must not be entered. Steam and hot water in the landscape do not identify a place where swimming is allowed. This distinction also matters at Geysir and Strokkur, where bathing, including in spring outflows, is forbidden.

Give changing and showering their own place in your schedule. If you are travelling with a group, agree on the departure time before spreading out between the changing rooms and pool. A bath reservation should anchor the day rather than become an extra stop squeezed into the final minutes of an already crowded route.

Children, reservations and getting to Flúðir

Children aged eight and younger must wear armbands. Children through age sixteen require adult accompaniment, with no more than three children per adult. Plan your party around those supervision requirements before choosing the excursion. The rules apply to the visit even when entrance comes as part of a sightseeing package.

Advance reservation is strongly recommended, and arrival without a booking does not secure a place. For self-drive visits, choose the bath session alongside your other stops. Guest parking is available during opening hours, and overnight parking or camping there is prohibited. Public transport between Selfoss and Flúðir is very limited; plan the actual connections rather than treating it as a frequent sightseeing shuttle.

For an overnight base in the area, Flúðir has accommodation, restaurants, shopping and camping infrastructure. Our guide to Golden Circle bases compares locations. If bathing is the main decision, Laugarvatn Fontana offers a different stop by the lake, with bath admission and bread baking sold as separate experiences.

Questions about visiting Secret Lagoon

Do these excursions include admission?

The featured Golden Circle combinations include Secret Lagoon entrance. The ten-hour Kerið combination lists a Fontana substitution for 13 to 23 May without a year, so use the bathing arrangement for your selected date.

Should I bring a towel?

A towel and swimwear are extra at the bath. Showers and a locker are included in its admission arrangements. Bringing your own towel and bathing clothes keeps the visit simpler.

Can children visit?

Children through sixteen need adult accompaniment, with a maximum of three children per adult. Children through eight must wear armbands. Keep these requirements in mind when planning the family group.

Can I bathe in the neighbouring springs?

Use the designated bathing pool. The neighbouring hot springs are not a bathing area, and running, jumping and diving are prohibited at the lagoon.
