Geysir and Strokkur in Haukadalur

Geysir is the geothermal stop on the Golden Circle, in Haukadalur. The Great Geysir and Strokkur are different springs: Strokkur is the one to watch for eruptions every few minutes, with variable timing. Build some waiting time into the visit instead of arriving for an exact predicted burst. It is a place to observe geothermal activity from the marked paths, with barriers defining where visitors should stand.

Pair the stop with Þingvellir National Park and Gullfoss waterfall for the route's main landscape experiences. A guided day trip handles the wider sightseeing itinerary, while a self-drive visit lets you decide how much walking to include here. The Golden Circle route guide covers the planning around these separate stops.

Watching eruptions without a fixed countdown

Keep the names straight when planning photographs. Seeing Strokkur erupt is different from expecting a regular eruption from the Great Geysir. The springs share a geothermal area, but their behaviour should not be treated as interchangeable. Allow the visit to unfold around what is happening rather than reducing it to an arrival time and a guaranteed photograph.

For a short sightseeing stop, make the marked paths and observation of Strokkur the focus. If you want a longer walk, consider the Laugarfjall route when local conditions permit. Decide that before filling the rest of the day with additional activities: a geothermal walk and a timed bath or snorkeling experience each deserve a clear place in the schedule.

Marked walking routes and Laugarfjall

The area is protected as a natural monument, with geothermal ground and deposits that need to remain undisturbed. Stay on marked paths and leave stones, soil and deposits where they are. Throwing coins, stones, soap or other objects into the springs is prohibited. The rule protects the area as well as keeping visitors away from unsafe ground.

Bathing is prohibited in the springs and their outflows. Treat this as a viewing stop, even if the water looks inviting from a distance. Use the barriers rather than inventing a safe distance in metres. If bathing is part of the day you want, the separate Secret Lagoon guide describes that organised bathing visit.

The Laugarfjall circuit offers viewpoints over the geothermal area and towards Helludalur and Bjarnarfell. Choose it as an extension when the paths suit the day's conditions. Follow signs and turn back at closures. A named walking route is a planning option, so leave yourself room to shorten the walk rather than assuming every part will be accessible in winter.

Parking at the geothermal area

The published Parka tariff for zone 8201, checked in November 2026, is 1,080 ISK for a vehicle with 1 to 7 seats for 8 hours. The web transaction adds 89 ISK. These are parking charges for the designated area; keep them separate from the cost of a guided excursion. The length of the parking period is also different from how long you need for your particular visit.

Web payment is available until 24 hours after leaving. Parking and toilet facilities are included in the published description, and overnight stays are prohibited. Use the correct vehicle registration when paying and follow the signs for the parking area you use. If travelling with a tour, work from its meeting instructions and return time rather than arranging the stop around a self-drive parking allowance.

Choose the extra activity that suits the day

The coach itinerary with a horse-farm visit includes the Golden Circle's main stops, a visit to local Icelandic horses with feeding treats, Kerið entry and a coach with a toilet and Wi-Fi. It suits visitors who want the geothermal area as part of a varied sightseeing day with a farm visit. The horses are domestic animals, so think of this as a farm experience.

The minibus combination with Secret Lagoon includes bath entry, a small group format, Reykjavík pickup and drop-off and visits to Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss. The snorkeling combination includes Reykjavík pickup and drop-off, snorkeling gear, a certified snorkeling guide, underwater photographs and hot chocolate with cookies after snorkeling. Read the Silfra snorkeling guide for preparation before choosing that more active day.

For other departure formats, use the Golden Circle tour comparison. Keep the whole day flexible when driving: check road and weather conditions before leaving, leave time between activities and respect local barriers on arrival. A clear plan for the main stops is more useful than trying to attach a precise eruption time to the road journey.

Questions about Geysir and Strokkur

Which spring should I watch for eruptions?

Strokkur is the spring that erupts every few minutes, with variable timing. The Great Geysir is a separate spring, so plan around observation rather than expecting both to erupt regularly.

Can I bathe in the geothermal water?

Bathing is prohibited in the springs and their outflows. Keep to marked paths. Choose a dedicated bathing visit such as Secret Lagoon if you want a bath on the route.

What does car parking cost?

For the designated Parka area, a vehicle with up to 7 seats costs 1,080 ISK for 8 hours, plus an 89 ISK web transaction charge. This is a vehicle parking tariff.

Do the suggested trips visit more than Geysir?

They are Golden Circle itineraries with an explicit Geysir visit. Choose between a horse-farm stop, Secret Lagoon bathing and a combination with Silfra snorkeling.
